I also found the shields really embarassing (and still do if I'm honest, and also we call them boobs - the cries of "where are my boobs?" or "have you put my boobs in the milton?" still amuse me). I also regularly feel mortified about bottle feeding, and want to find a big banner that says "It's OK, it's breastmilk, I'm trying". And yes, when she actually latches on without a scream and does it properly, it's amazing. I just wish she'd do it more. Big bits of your story are so familiar. I joined loads of groups in the hope that I'd end up with some friends at the end of the day - you know once people got settled, fell out with each other, went back to work etc etc. my best friends were from the baby signing class I went to - I suppose we had similar values on fun, music and communication. Reminds me of the P&T group I set up when my youngest was in need of one (he's almost 13 now). It's still going and two of the parents I passed it on to when I moved away still run it now.
